Communiweb is an Apple Certified Systems Administrator (less than 25 in the world!) and has been working with storage solutions in conjunction with the largest names in the business.

For Tier 2 and 3 applications, it's difficult to find a more cost-effective solution than Apple's XSan and XServe RAID combination. With OS X.4's 2 Petabyte capability, it's not hard to see why for most businesses (especially video workflow and backup solutions), Apple's XSan solution is the way to go. At less than one-fifth the price of comparable solutions in the Windows world, Apple has provided a robust, cost-effective solution that works with major fiber-channel solutions as provided by QLogic, Brocade, and Exabyte. Oh, and it works with Windows as well.

Xsan is a 64-bit cluster file system that provides concurrent data access over high-speed Fibre Channel to multiple systems on the network. Each Xsan client can use this centralized data as if it were directly connected storage.

Here are some of XSan's key features:

  • Storage consolidation
  • High throughput.
  • Concurrent access
  • File-level locking
  • Easy volume scalability
  • High availability
  • Remote administration
  • Compatibility and interoperability

Tier 1 Support

In the summer of 2005, Communiweb joined forces with PAC Data to provide best-in-class storage solutions to enterprise customers. For companies seeking cost appropriate solutions, Communiweb/PAC Data offers highly functional products that provide the appropriate class of storage to satisfy the needs of the most demanding applications.

Perhaps there is no technology more in demand than storage networks.  Storage Area Networks (SAN) provide shared access to storage resources previously dedicated to a single server or application.  Although Fibre Channel SAN solutions dominate the enterprise market, many IT managers are considering alternative solutions based on ISCSI technologies that deliver similar functionality at a fraction of the cost.

The performance of disk storage makes it an ideal platform for most applications.  Previously the cost of disk has made it prohibitive for applications such as backup.  However, with the improvement of RAID technologies that offer greater availability, Serial ATA (SATA) subsystems provide the Quality of Service (QoS) to maintain 99.999% availability or less than 5 minutes of downtime per year.

In addition to high availability, SATA based subsystems make it practical for disk based backup solutions.  Disk-to-disk (D2D), and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) solutions have proliferated as a result of the reduced cost and improved performance of disk backup solutions. Combining disk and tape technologies for backup and archiving applications is part of an overall Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) strategy.

Some of the features you can find in these solutions include:

  • Volume management and provisioning
  • Thin provisioning
  • Snapshots
  • Security (authentication using CHAP w/ iSCSI and LUN masking w/ FIbre Channel connectivity)
  • Scalability packages
  • Configurable, automatable snapshot packages
  • Remote Data Proection packages
  • Failover and Load-balancing Capabilities

It would be impossible to presume your company's needs, however. To ensure the best possible configuration for your company's needs, you should call Communiweb for specific information related to your needs.
